Nagatoro

Hello, travelers. This is KumiPicturesque Japan Blog welcomes you to Nagatoro.

In the first place, did you ever hear about Nagatoro? It's a day trip destination from Tokyo where you can see the history of the earth!

Nagatromachi Tourist Association tells you a lot about Nagatoro on their website including how to get there from Tokyo. (*Approximately two hours)
https://www.nagatoro.gr.jp/en/index.html

This is Nagatoro station. Isn't this cute? Japanese people feel nostalgia. Do you feel the same way?

OMG!!! You cannot use IC cards on Chichibu Railway!!! You can enjoy good old Japan here.

(*If you go there via Kumagaya, please consider getting 秩父路遊々フリーきっぷ [Chichibu-ji Yu-yu Free Kippu] for 1,440 yen. If you go there via Yorii, ぶらり!秩父長瀞おでかけきっぷ [Burari! Chichibu Nagatoro Odekake Kippu] for 1,030 yen. They are one-day unlimited cards available on Saturday, Sunday, national holiday, and some peak seasons. There are many days when you can get these tickets so you could ask a station clerk about their availability)

Here is the information (*only in Japanese)

Coin lockers are available just outside the station for 200 yen.

Now, let's walk to the river. You can see amazing rocks here.

Nagatoro Iwadatami
https://en.japantravel.com/saitama/nagatoro-iwadatami/30678

They look like mille-feuille because they were deep in the earth long long long time ago, but came out to the surface. So Nagatoro is called ”window to the earth.”

Look at these grid lines!!! When the rocks came up to the surface and got freed from the pressure, they got these cracks.

Here is a giant's kettle (also called a giant's cauldron or pothole).

After seeing several million years of history, you would feel very young! :)

Now, let's take Hodosan Ropeway (aerial gondola).

The free shuttle service may be available from the station to Hodosan Ropeway so please ask for the information at the tourist center.

A roundtrip ticket is for 800 yen.

Look at this view!!!!

You could visit this shrine (a brunch of Hodosan Shrine).

This is the top of Mt. Hodosan.

Very peaceful.

After the ropeway rides, you can walk to Hodosan Shrine.

Wow! I love the atmosphere. About one million people visit here every year. The shrine got awarded one star in the Michelin Green Guide Japan.

Yup. I came up the stairs. Good exercise.

If you're interested in rocks, fossils, etc., you could visit Saitama Museum of Natural History.

You could also enjoy Nagatoro River White Water Rafting.

I didn't have time to join the tour, but a young couple I met at a restaurant showed me this amazing photo! (*I asked them to send me the photo. Thank you so much!)

Do you know what's amazing about this photo? Do you see the steam locomotive on the bridge?

This is called Pareo Express.

It stops at Nagatro station twice a day (*a round trip from Kumagaya to Mitsumineguchi).

Nicely old-fashioned.

It was fun to be onboad because a lot of people wave at you. :)

The trip to Nagatoro was something like a trip to the past.
